Trefonnen Community Centre
Ysgol Trefonnen Community Focused School
“A Community Focused school is one that provides a range of services and activities often beyond the school day to help meet the needs of its pupils, their families and the wider community”
(Community Focused Schools. Circular No.34/2003, National Assembly for Wales)
The school is striving to achieve this in a variety of ways.
- Flying Start is now part of the school building, helping to support families from birth to school and beyond.
- Creating links with our Community Partner and other local services to support our families and their individual needs.
- Engaging with families to find out what is important to them and how we can best support them as a school.
- Supporting the school curriculum through wider community involvement.
Here are some examples of what we have achieved so far.
In 2014 was the Come Outside! project which brought together 40 volunteers from parents and family, pupils and community groups. These volunteers worked with staff, Friends of the school and governors to support the foundation phase and Eco-council develop the outside space to: enhance our outdoor learning space; increase the biodiversity of the school grounds and; provide opportunity for school and community growing projects.
In 2014 we opened new Flying Start settings, provisions in both Welsh and English medium. These settings help to support our families locally with pre-school children, helping to give them a “Flying Start” in life. We work closely with parents/carers, Health Visitors and Powys Children’s and Young Peoples Partnership to create creative and supportive environments in which 2 year old children can thrive. We support them in developing new skills and gaining confidence in a pre-school setting prior to entering our 3+ settings.
As Community Manager, Barbra Gough has been spending time since September gathering information from everyone involved in the community focused school in order to get a clear picture of everyone’s opinions of the community focused school and how we can best support our families and community in the future. Once all the information has been gathered, a Community Action Plan will be created to give short and long term goals to share with everyone. Watch this space!!!
